An exhibition marking the 100th anniversary of Mrs. Underwood’s death, , at the Underwood Family Memorial Hall   Located on Yonsei University campus, the Underwood Family Memorial Hall holds a small commemorative exhibition to mark the 170th anniversary of birth and the 100th anniversary of death of Underwood’s wife, Lillias Horton Underwood. Come-pattern pottery, a prelude to new era   Thousands of years ago, our ancestors had experience of creating pottery from soil, and using it, they had ability to recreate various foods from food resources.   Come-pattern pottery can explain this change in Neolithic people’s living way, also show us local tradition at that era and artistic sense of Neolithic people.   Curator Seo Insun will tell you the story of Neolithic comb-pattern pottery, a prelude to new era.

Severance history with school symbols   ‘School symbol’ is a symbol with designs that represent one’s school. Yonsei University has changed its school symbol sever times since it started as Jejungwon in 1885. Severance Medical School went through dynamic history of change and development until it became Yonsei University in 1957 by combining with Yeonhee College, and School symbol also underwent many changes. So, we would like to tell you Yonsei symbol’s history and Severance history together. Jung Yongseo, curator of Dong-eun Medical Museum, will introduce Yonsei symbols with Severance history and senior’s lives.

A Memory in ‘House of Underwood’, 「Episode : Second and basement floor」 ‘House of Underwood’ is a memory hall now, but it had been built as a company house for missionary Won Hangyung (Horace H. Underwood) in 1927 and four generations of Underwood had actually lived there since then. This house was chosen as nationally register cultural heritage on April 5, this year so the home of faith, love, and hope became a memorial hall of Yonsei History and modernization in Korea.   Director Won Hanseok (Peter A. Underwood) who grew up there will tell you vividly about Underwood family’s life in this house, precious memories for them.

    In this museum talk, curator Yoon Hyunjin explains a special exhibition of our museum ‘To Turbulent Seas of Memory: The World of Tomiyama Taeko’ (2021.3.12~6.30), which opened on March 12. Tomiyama Taeko, who is 100 years old this year, has constantly accused barbarism of the era and testified voices of oppressed victims through her works, dreaming future full of life beyond this era full of frustration and anger. We hope this exhibition will be an opportunity for you to feel her message of the ‘life’ and to think on what you should witness and testify right now.

Tomiyama Taeko, 『Be dissilient, gardenbalsam』 (Movie that contains 『The grudge inside the wall – Dedicated to Yoon Dongju, a poet who died in Fukuoka Prison』), 1984.   Yonsei University Museum and Institute for Advanced Studies on Asia The University of Tokyo prepared jointly the exhibition ‘To Turbulent Seas of Memory: The World of Tomiyama Taeko’ (2021.3.12. ~ 6.30.). Ahead of the exhibition opening, former museum director Baek Youngseo will tell you the story of Japanese painter Tomiyama Taeko who has lived for 100 years pursuing human rights, opposing war and hoping peace. The world reality seemed like a series of violent storms to her, and this gaze remains as a historical testimony in her artworks.

Yoon Chi-ho’s relics, and history of the Korean Empire and Independence Association   In the competition of the world powers, Joseon was on the verge of becoming a colony. To escape this danger by making efforts for independence, strenuous reform, and extending the civil rights, Joseon declared the Korean Empire in 1897 also the enlightenments intellectual established Independent Association and worked actively. Yonsei University Museum received relics from Yoon Chi-ho’s family in 1967. Among them especially through ‘The official stamp of Korean Empire Independence Association (National Registered Cultural Asst No.548)’ and his full- dress uniform as civil servant , you can see a section of the Korean Empire period. In this Museum Talk, former Museum director Kim Do-hyung tells you this interesting story!

A missionary’s commitment to Joseon. Gwanghyewon, Jejungwon, and Severance may have started with only the will of one or two people. But they could become the big institutions today thanks to the hard work and dedication of many unknown people. It would be very foolish to compare how much each people contributed. Kim Sehoon, director of the Dong-eun Medical Museum, is going to tell you the story of an missionary doctor 110 years ago in Joseon. By listening to his devoted life story, you will be able to feel the spirit of Christianity, pioneering, and cooperation that leads Yonsei’s present and future.

The Paleolithic people of Maedoon cave in Jeongsun caught fish with nets! Yonsei University Museum excavated Maedoon cave-sites five times from 2016 to 2019, where the cultural layer of various periods from the Paleolithic to the Neolithic and Bronze Ages was identified. Specially, in the excavation conducted from 2018 to 2019, the oldest existing Paleolithic weights of fishing nets was released along with fish backbone, which has attracted great attention from domestic and foreign academia so far. Here is the story of the oldest net weight from Maedoon cave in Jeongsun and Han Chang-gyun, former museum director, will tell you this interesting story vividly. 

Parun SOHN Po-kee, A pioneer in Yonsei prehistoric research.   Parun SOHN Po-kee excavated the ruins of Seokjang-ri, Gongju in 1964 and revealed that Korean history existed from the Paleolithic period. After that, by investigating numerous prehistoric relics such as Jecheon Jummal Cave, Cheongwon Durubong Cave, Danyang permanent rock shelter, Tongyeong Sangnodae-island Shell Mound and Yangpyeong Andeok-ri Goindol, he ultimately made Yonsei University Museum become a specialized institution for prehistoric research in name and reality.  To mark the 10th anniversary of Professor Parun SOHN Pokee’s death, we have prepared a museum talk about Yonsei University’s prehistoric excavation history. With Cho Tae-seop, director of the museum, let’s look back on the history of prehistoric excavations that Professor SOHN devoted his whole life!

The Korean War that Yonsei went through   The Korean War, 70 years ago, was the most disastrous and shameful time in our history. Yonsei was also wounded and frustrated in the middle of the war.   The scars of the war remain throughout the Sinchon Campus, which was the site of a fierce battle. The bullet marks on the Underwood statue symbolize the indomitable struggle of the ‘Yonsei spirit’, and the scratches of the Joseon royal Sugyengwon, which promoted independence and modernization, awakens ‘Yonsei mission’. Underwood’s house preserves even the shells that made it hideous.   However, in 『Yeonhee University President’s log』 written during the war, confusion, fear and poverty were not only recorded. The courage to protect the ivory tower of liberty and truth from Seoul to Daegu and Busan, and the mission with hope of university gathered in the tent class in the refuge was also recorded. To maintain our peace and prosperity and lead them together, let’s closely follow the traces of the ordeal left by history.

A multi-purpose weapon from the Bronze Age, the stone arrowhead in Yeondanag twin caves   Yeondang twin caves are cave-sites excavated by Yonsei University Museum in 2004. The museum investigated the traces of prehistoric people using the cave for a long time, from the Paleolithic to the Neolithic and Bronze Age. Five stone arrowheads were excavated along with human bones at one corner of the cave, which were multi-purpose weapons used for hunting or killing. You can go to the Bronze Age with Curator Seo Inseon and see life in Yeondang twin caves, where people hunted and fought with arrows equipped with stone arrowheads.

Graduation from medical school is not the end, but the beginning!   In order to become a doctor today, you have to pass the National Examination for Medical Practitioners after 6 years of medical school. You will only be qualified as a specialist after intern and resident courses. Internship system provides hands-on experience by touring each department for a year after graduating. When did this internship system start in Korea? Let’s find out about the ‘Internship system’ with Jeong Yong-seo, curator of Dong-Eun Medical Museum.

Han Jin-seop, a happy sculptor who discovers the shape from the stone.   “The sculpture is already complete within the marble block, before I start my work. It is already there, I just have to chisel away the superfluous material.” Michelangelo   Han Jin-seop, Finding a dream, 2000, Granite. Curator Yoon Hyun-jin will tell you the story of happy sculptor Mr. Han, who listens to the nature of stone and discover its shape, with his work ‘Finding a dream’.

“Grain grinder from the Neolithic era, Gal-dol & Gal-pan in Sangnodae Island”   In 1978, Yonsei University Museum excavated the remains of Neolithic shell mound in Sangnodae Island, Tongyeong. Various artifacts such as chipped stone tools, polished stone tools, Comb-pattern Pottery, harpoons, fishing tackles, bone needles and clam bracelets were excavated there, too. Among them, Gal-dol and Gal-pan, which are paired with each other, were precious households at that time as they are the first grain grinders in the Neolithic era, when farming and processing food began. Curator Seo In-seon will show you the Neolithic era’s life, lived by the water of the island village and used Gal-dol & Gal-pan, through the relics of Sangnodae Island.

“Severance Hospital Medical College’s first diploma”   Severance Hospital Medical College’s first graduation ceremony was held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 1908. Twenty-two years after Allen started medical education and more than a decade after Avison started it, seven students finally graduated from Severance for the first time. Today’s relic is the diploma they received at this ceremony, the result of many years of their hard work. Let’ take a look at the first diploma of Yonsei with Jeong Yong-seo, curator of the Dong-Eun Medical Museum.

 "Writing on canvas. Painter Ma Gwang-soo" “When I draw, I focus most on ‘spontaneity’ such as childhood innocence.”  “I skip the procedure of setting the composition and determining the color in advance.  I just draw as the brush goes. And also put the verses I wrote in order to try Western style literary painting. Theses are not the lines selected from the existing poems but created phrases spontaneously by me.”   “The genre that best fits the word ‘art’ is painting.” “Art is the only means of nonviolently mediating the two things, ‘coercive conscience’ and ‘furious instinct’”   Gwang-ma(狂馬), Ma Kwang-soo   Professor Ma Kwang-soo is remembered as a novelist and poet, and curator Yoon Hyun-jin will guide us through ‘the literary painting of Ma Kwang-soo’ reproduced on his canvas.

High technology in the Paleolithic period Micro-blade tools at Seokjang-ri site   Yonsei University Museum excavated the remains of Seokjang-ri, Gongju in 1964, and these are Korea’s first Paleolithic ruins. Very small stone tool was discovered from the site of a house built 20,000 years ago there. This is micro-blade tools which was born amid technological innovation for continued tens of thousands of years, so called the high-tech from the Paleolithic period. Micro-blades are very small to hold, usually 2-4cm long and 0.4~0.8cm wide. How did Paleolithic people make these micro-blades and why did create them?   Curator, Seo In-sun will guide you to the world of Paleolithic high technology 20,000 years ago.

"Newly built Jejungwon, Severance Hospital" In April 1900, L.H Severance was impressed by O.R. Avison’s speech, “Comity in Medical Missions”, at Carnegie Hall in New York. And he donated a fund to build a new hospital. When Avison thanked him for donation, Mr. Severance said “You are no happier to receive it than to give it.” With Severance's donation, the hospital purchased the site in Dodong (Peach Valley) outside Namdaemun in June 1902 and the beginning ceremony of "New Jejungwon, Severance Hospital" was held on November 27. Today’s relic is a kind of time capsule placed under the cornerstone that day.   Why don’t we go back more than 100 years ago by opening this time capsule? April Revolution recorded by Yonsei   “Student, wake up!” Starting with the chant, 3,000 Yonsei people marched into the scene of the revolution.
